Freida always knew she wanted to be an actress, professional or not. Though with the high standards of India’s response to Hollywood – Bollywood – it’s very difficult to get ahead. As Freida put it: “You have to be a child of an actor or actress, or have a godfather.”
Her one in a life time-chance came with Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, which was to be filmed in the city of Mumbai, India. When Boyle saw Freida’s tape he immediately asked for her to come to the audition. But since she had no acting experience, they put her through an entire process of auditioning for six months. “The first time I read with the casting director and the second time on it was with Danny Boyle. I would go in probably once a month, sometimes twice a month and every time I’d go in for an audition Danny would say ‘Fantastic. I’ll see you again’. So every time he said that I’d say, ‘Okay, maybe in three days’. 30 days! He’d just keep me waiting for 30 days. I think every time I went in was fun. I’m not complaining because I think it was literally like going to an acting school and I think it was necessary because since I had absolutely no acting experience besides the amateur theatre that I’d done.”

On what drew her to the movie, Freida said “The moment I read the script, I fell in love with the story, because it wasn’t just a story about four women; it was a story of the people of Israel and Palestine. I felt if there were any way I could be part of this peacemaking process by lending a human touch to the character, I wanted to be involved. I wish people would [remember]that there are children and soldiers dying on both sides. You can’t ignore the politics, but hopefully that won’t become the focus of the film.”
The movie was faced with some tough reviews due to it’s touchy subject about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Director Julian Schnabel had a hard time fighting for a the rating he thought the movie deserved, as MPAA wanted to give it an R-rating. In February 2010 Variety reported that Freida were to take part in yet another movie; War of the Gods. She plays Phaedra, an oracle priestess who must join Theseus (played by Henry Cavill) on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war between the gods from erupting. This project, directed by Tarsem Singh, started filming in April in Montreal, Canada. About working on the movie, Freida said “what an exciting project. It was very interesting when I learned that the men were going to be objectified and the women could just enjoy themselves. I was excited about doing a project where I was all covered but the men had these tiny miniskirts on. Sometimes the skirt was almost not there! The director, Tarsem Singh, is a visualist-his mind is almost like a child’s imagination. He brings to life what some people can only imagine. The movie was shot using a green screen, which made me nervous at first, but then I realized you just have to let your imagination flow.” Immortals was released on November 11, 2011 (or 11.11.11 as all the trailers stated) to a better-than-expected $32 million opening weekend, the best one ever for the production company Relativity Media. This led to talks about a sequel, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

It debuted to $54 million and has earned well over $450 million worldwide to date, very good considering the amount of doubt the movie was met with from Internet bloggers.
When interviewed, Freida said that she agreed to do the movie (eventhough it’s a small part) because “I just thought that there was a lot of soul to it. When I read the script, finally, after auditioning, I found myself even more drawn to it. I also like films with a lot of animals in it, and what happens to animals really does break my heart.” She also praised co-star James Franco, saying “he’s got his own unique and distinctive style of acting. It’s not conventional at all. It does take you by surprise initially, but it’s all about being flexible and trying to understand how another actor works. I was so glad I had company.” Black Gold opened the 2011 Doha International Film Festival on October 25, 2011 and was released in theaters internationally late November/early December with no US release date set.

But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Trishna’s tragedy is that she is torn between the traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her.
Trishna debuted at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival to good to mixed reviews (the movie was critiqued for not having a full script but instead let the actors improvise the dialogue), however most of them praised Freida’s portrayal of the titular character. She was called “superb”, “luminous” and with a “vulnerability that is raw, rare, and very moving”. The movie continued to play various film festivals all around the world. Sundance Selects bought the distribution rights, but no US release date has been given.
